Before a Tenerife drive, it helps to prepare the navigation app you plan to use. This guide covers one narrow task: downloading and checking a map area before setting out. It does not choose a route, check road incidents or describe parking.
Prepare the map while connected
In Google Maps, open your profile menu and choose Offline maps. Select the area you expect to use, adjust its boundaries and download it while connected to the internet. Google’s current instructions for Android explain the steps; iPhone and iPad have a separate tab on the same help page.
Choose an area that covers your planned start, destination and any places between them. If the app does not offer the whole area you need, check whether it lets you select the missing areas separately. Google notes that offline map downloads are not available in some countries or regions, so check what your own device and app actually offer rather than assuming the download succeeded.
Check what works offline
Google says a downloaded map can guide a drive when the entire route lies inside the saved area. When you are offline, Google Maps does not provide live traffic information or alternative routes. A downloaded map therefore helps with basic navigation; it is not a live road-status service.
Before departure, open the offline-map list and confirm the area is present and fully downloaded. Check that it covers the places you plan to visit. If the app offers an expiry or update notice, follow its current instructions while connected. Keep your destination details accessible in case you need to re-enter them while parked.
Set up the destination and phone position before moving. If you need to change the map or route, stop in a safe place first; do not handle the phone while driving.
Keep trip planning separate
This article explains how to prepare the map on your device. For a day-by-day itinerary, road conditions or parking choices, use those dedicated guides and check current official information for the question at hand.

FAQ
Will an offline map show traffic or suggest a different route? Google says live traffic and alternative routes are unavailable when offline.
Is downloading enough for any route? No. Google says the entire route must fit inside the saved map area. Check the boundaries in your app before leaving.
